The megacity Rises to Toxic Pollution Following Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the capital registered an pollution measurement over 500, which represents ten times the healthy threshold recommended by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times above acceptable limits.

Firecracker Ban and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that blankets the metropolis as winter begins.

Yet recently, the recently formed local leadership appealed to the supreme court to propose a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and environment".

Judicial Verdict and Implementation

To the disappointment of environmental and health advocates, judges approved the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the capital registered pollution peaking around midnight to some of the worst levels observed during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Implications

The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab pointing to declining pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants traveling from neighboring India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in the capital have continued as a serious problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around Diwali, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The problem in the city is resulting from a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in adjacent regions of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, generating dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.

Medical and Financial Impact

The economic and health consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants calling home the capital region is substantial, according to numerous studies.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is calculated to be causing 10,000 early fatalities per year in the capital.
